CreaTech is the newest addition to the Creative Industries. It’s where creativity and technology come together.

It’s less of a distinct ‘industry’ like the others are - it’s more of a thick thread that runs through every single creative industry. CreaTech is all about using digital tools and creative ideas to make exciting experiences, products and content and as you can guess - a huge part of pretty much every industry is CreaTech focused now.

This could include things like virtual reality, artificial intelligence, immersive media, interactive storytelling and digital design tools. CreaTech is helping shape how we create all the creative industries now. People working in CreaTech often mix creative thinking with tech skills. You might build virtual worlds, develop creative software, design immersive experiences or use technology to tell stories in new ways.

It’s one of the fastest-growing parts of the creative industries and it’s constantly evolving as new technology emerges.

  • Here are some good examples of CreaTech in action:

    ———————————

🎮 Immersive experiences (VR, AR and virtual worlds)

    • VR concerts and events where audiences can attend a live show in a virtual world.

    • Immersive theatre experiences that use projection, sensors or virtual reality to put the audience inside the story.

    • Virtual reality training simulations used in creative storytelling or museums.

These experiences combine creative storytelling with technologies like virtual reality, augmented reality and game engines.

    ———————————

🎬 Virtual production in film and TV

    • Films and TV shows using LED volume stages and game engines (like those used on The Mandalorian) to create digital environments instead of physical sets.

    • Directors and designers can build worlds in real time using game technology.

This is a huge example of CreaTech because it blends filmmaking, animation and advanced digital technology.

    ———————————

    🎨 AI and creative tools

    • AI tools that help artists generate images, music or visual effects.

    • Design software that helps designers quickly create prototypes or digital artwork.

    • AI tools that help game studios generate characters, assets or environments.

These tools support creative work by using artificial intelligence and data-driven technology.

    ———————————

    🕹️ Interactive games and storytelling

    • Narrative games where the player’s choices shape the story.

    • Interactive documentaries or digital experiences where audiences explore a story themselves.

    • Game engines used for things beyond games, like theatre or music experiences.

Game technology is often used in many creative sectors as part of CreaTech innovation.

    ———————————

🖼️ Digital art and immersive exhibitions

    • Projection-mapped art installations

    • Interactive museum exhibits

    • Large digital exhibitions where visitors move through animated environments.

These projects combine creative design, animation, sound and digital technology.

  • A fast-growing sector
CreaTech – the combination of creativity and advanced technology – is one of the fastest-growing parts of the UK’s creative economy. It’s expected to grow up to 10 times faster than the wider creative industries.

    Economic impact
Experts estimate that CreaTech could add around £18 billion to the UK economy over the next decade as new technologies transform creative industries like film, gaming, design and music.

    Future jobs
The sector could also create around 160,000 new jobs in the UK over the next 10 years as businesses develop new technologies and creative experiences.

    Growing demand for skills
Demand for CreaTech roles is increasing quickly. Job vacancies in core CreaTech roles grew almost five times faster than the UK economy average in recent years.

    Investment and innovation
Investment in UK CreaTech businesses is growing, with over £5 billion invested by venture capital firms in recent years to support new companies and technologies.

    Why this matters
Because it combines creative talent with digital and technical skills, CreaTech is seen as a key area for innovation, economic growth and future careers in the UK.

  • 🎭 In the future, stories might not just be watched — they’ll be experienced.
With virtual reality, augmented reality and immersive technology, audiences could step inside films, concerts, theatre shows and games instead of just watching them.

🤖 AI could become a creative partner.
Artists, designers and filmmakers are already using AI to generate ideas, visuals, music and scripts. In the future, creative teams might collaborate with AI tools the same way they work with other creatives.

🎬 Virtual production could replace traditional film sets.
Huge LED screens and real-time game engines are already being used to create entire worlds for film and TV. In the future, directors might be able to change locations, lighting or weather instantly on set.

🌍 Digital worlds could become huge creative industries of their own.
Virtual worlds and the metaverse could host concerts, fashion shows, exhibitions and jobs for designers, musicians, storytellers and developers.

🖼 Museums, galleries and live events may become fully immersive.
Projection mapping, interactive installations and mixed-reality experiences could allow visitors to explore art, history and culture in completely new ways.

📱 Creative tools are becoming more accessible.
Technology is making it easier than ever to create films, music, games and digital art — meaning more people can become creators, not just consumers.

It’s heavy (so this one is more for the staff than the students really), but this report about CreaTech is brilliant for painting a picture of what CreaTech is and how the future of the Creative Industries will be shaped by it.

Keep an eye on CreaTech Frontiers, which is the government-funded research centre for CreaTech and will keep you updated on all innovations and big news in the sector.
